160. The 4% Rule for Retirement

Wondering how much money you might need to retire? The 4% rule is a useful starting point. Take the annual income you want from your investments and multiply it by 25.

For example, $50,000 a year would require roughly $1.25 million. The rule suggests withdrawing about 4% in your first year and adjusting for inflation afterward.

It’s not a guarantee you’ll never run out, but it has worked in 85% of historical rolling 30-year periods.

161. Never Ignore a Strange Almond Smell

If you suddenly notice an unexplained bitter almond-like smell alongside other signs of a possible chemical exposure, leave the area and contact emergency services.

Some dangerous chemicals, including certain cyanide compounds, can reportedly have a bitter almond odor, but many people can’t smell them at all. Never rely on smell alone to detect a hazardous gas.

If you suspect a chemical leak or exposure, getting to fresh air and letting professionals investigate is much safer than trying to find the source yourself.

162. Protect Your Clothes From Hotel Irons

Before putting a hotel iron directly onto your favorite shirt, grab a clean towel first. Hotel irons can occasionally have mineral buildup, residue, or dirty water inside that may leave marks when you first use the steam function.

Place the towel between the iron and your clothing for the first few passes, or test the iron on the towel first. It takes just a few seconds and could save you from discovering a rusty stain five minutes before an important event.

163. Try the Silent Call Trick

Getting hammered by suspicious robocalls? One trick you can try is answering and immediately muting your microphone instead of speaking.

Some automated calling systems may disconnect when they don’t detect a response. However, there’s no guarantee this will get your number marked as inactive, and answering unknown calls can sometimes confirm that your number is active.

Your safest bet is still to block repeat offenders, enable your phone’s spam filtering, and avoid giving callers any personal information.

164. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Food

If groceries are getting difficult to afford, remember that help may be closer than you think.

Sikh places of worship called gurdwaras commonly serve a free community meal known as langar, which is traditionally open to everyone regardless of religion, background, or income.

You can also look for local food banks, community fridges, churches, meal programs, and food-rescue organizations. There’s no need to wait until things become desperate, these resources exist specifically so people can use them when they need a little help.
