BUT if you’re only going to read ONE thing today make it this…

Every headline satisfies an opinion. Except ours.

Remember when the news was about what happened, not how to feel about it? 1440's Daily Digest is bringing that back. Every morning, they sift through 100+ sources to deliver a concise, unbiased briefing — no pundits, no paywalls, no politics. Just the facts, all in five minutes. For free.

145. Karat vs. Carat

Karat and carat sound identical, but they measure completely different things. Carat measures the weight of gemstones, with one carat equal to 0.2 grams. K

arat, meanwhile, tells you how pure gold is. Pure gold is 24 karats, while 18K gold is 75% gold and 14K is about 58% gold. An easy way to remember it: carats are for stones, karats are for gold.

146. Those Bin Colors Have a Meaning

Those colorful medical waste bins aren’t just for decoration, they help workers quickly separate different types of potentially hazardous waste.

Depending on local regulations, colors can indicate categories such as anatomical or soiled waste, contaminated recyclables, sharps, glassware, and metallic waste. The exact color system varies by country and facility, though, so don’t assume a red or yellow bin means the same thing everywhere.

147. Beat the Resume Robots

Your resume might have to impress a computer before it ever reaches a human. Many employers use applicant-tracking systems (ATS) to organize applications and identify resumes containing relevant skills and keywords.

Tools such as Jobscan let you compare your resume with a specific job posting and highlight areas where the two don’t match. It can help you tailor your resume to the position—without simply stuffing it with random keywords.

148. Cabbage Leaves for Achy Knees?

It sounds like an old-fashioned home remedy, but cabbage leaves have actually been studied for knee osteoarthritis. Small clinical studies have found that wrapping the knee in cabbage leaves may help reduce pain for some people, although the evidence is still limited and it’s definitely not an instant cure.

Researchers have suggested cabbage’s plant compounds could play a role, but more research is needed. Still, it might explain why this unusual home remedy has stuck around for generations.

149. Does a Daily Drink Help You Live Longer?

You may have heard that moderate drinkers live longer than people who never drink, and some observational studies have found exactly that association.

One study found certain light-to-moderate drinking patterns were associated with higher odds of reaching age 90. But there’s an important catch: that doesn’t prove alcohol causes a longer life.

Other lifestyle and health differences can influence the results, and current health guidance does not recommend starting to drink for longevity. So unfortunately, a nightly glass of wine isn’t a proven life-extension hack.
