England to ban plastic wet wipes in a bid to clean up rivers and seas

England just passed a major new law that will phase out plastic-containing wet wipes by 2027 β€” a move designed to protect waterways, cut microplastic pollution, and stop those giant β€œfatbergs” that clog sewers. The government says 95% of the public supported the ban, and big retailers like Boots have already made the switch.

Why it matters? Plastic wipes don’t break down. They pollute beaches, turn into microplastics, and cause 94% of sewer blockagesβ€”costing households millions every year. Even though most people know wipes shouldn’t be flushed, a third of them still do it.
